INSTRUMENTS

Viola da gamba, Norman Myall, Colchester 2012

The Seven string is made after Michel Colichon  in Paris 1691. These instruments show the final developments of the Viol before it fell out of use by the growing popularity of the more powerful sounding cello. His instrument usually had carved heads and he experimented by using a variety of different woods on his instruments. Colichon died in 1694 at the age of 53 and there are only 6 of his basses that survive. Tailpiece is made by Izabela Deptuła.

Violone, Arnaud Giral, Bristol 2016

Violone based on an instrument attributed to Pellegrino di Zanetto preserved in the collection of the Philharmonie de Paris (FR). The original head’s pegbox was made to receive 5 pegs but it has been decided to make a 6 strings instrument, following examples found on painting such as the instruments depicted on some Evaristo Baschenis pictures. Some details (such as the fingerboard inlay and shape of the tailpiece) of the Violone (Gross Viol de Gamba-Bass) depicted on Michael Praetorius’s Syntagma Musicum have been used to complete the set-up. The back and sides are made of pear wood, the back is flat with a fold on the upper part. The front is made of spruce and has been carved. The instrument has 6 strings made of plain gut and is fretted as can be observed on both Baschenis and Praetorius examples.
